This site was a barren space of little distinction but for the lovely and neglected Summer House in the rear. Mostly viewed from above, the space had been a muddy backyard.

The solution was to make the space more distinctive. Using antique bluestone and perennial color, the viewer is drawn out to the Summer House, making the property feel bigger. The large perimeter hedges create privacy and a sense of place.

A stone terrace in front of the Summer House uses large 4’x6’ pieces of antique bluestone giving weight to the space. The low, drystack stone wall and stairs create dimension and the central swath of green softens and completes the space.

The perennial borders in this garden have carefully selected plant material, placed precisely to take advantage of the varying microclimates in the garden. They provide year-round color and interest for these energetic, horticultural clients.
